Session Guide

Your Session Day

What to expect from start to finish

Today's the day — your pup's big moment has arrived! Our session is all about having a relaxed, enjoyable experience. Your dog will set the pace, and we'll take plenty of breaks as we explore the beautiful location we've chosen.

How the Session Flows

01

Arrive 5–10 minutes early

Give your dog a chance to sniff around and settle in before we begin. A little sniff-time goes a long way for nervous or excitable dogs.

02

We follow your dog's lead

Your dog's only job is to be a dog — and to have a fantastic time! I'll handle everything else. As long as your dog is comfortable and enjoying a positive experience, we'll capture some truly beautiful moments together.

03

Portraits and connection shots

Once your dog is comfortable, I'll guide you through some gentle poses and connection moments together. If I need your dog in a particular position, I'll guide you through it at a pace that's comfortable for both of you.

04

Breaks, treats and belly rubs

We'll take plenty of breaks for sniffs, treats and belly rubs throughout the session. There's no rush — your dog sets the pace.

05

We wrap up and book your ordering appointment

At the end of your session, we'll book your Ordering Appointment — usually 1–2 weeks later at my home studio in Jerrabomberra. This is where the magic really happens.

Quick Tips for Session Day

Exercise them first

Give your dog some exercise earlier in the day to help them feel calm and focused. Just don't overdo it — avoid having them come to the session too tired or out of breath.

Bring high-value treats

Bring something they go absolutely crazy for — this is not the day for their regular kibble. Small treats work best — dime-sized for bigger dogs and pea-sized for smaller ones.

Bring their favourite toy

A beloved toy can bring out the best expressions and help nervous dogs relax. It's also great for action shots.

Stay relaxed

Your dog will pick up on your energy, so let's keep things calm and enjoyable. Don't worry if your dog doesn't behave perfectly — that's completely fine!

Let me be the treat giver

I kindly ask to be the primary treat giver during our time together. This way, your dog will associate me with those tasty rewards, making it easier to capture those adorable, soulful eyes.

Can't be off-leash? No problem.

Most of the dogs I photograph remain leashed throughout the entire session for their safety. I can even capture action shots using a special long line. Thanks to the magic of Photoshop, the leash will be removed from all final images. I'll show you how to hold the leash to make removing it a breeze.

A note on harnesses

Super-bulky harnesses and gentle leaders/head halters will not be removed in post-processing as they hide too much of the dog's chest. If your dog normally wears one for walks, I recommend using it walking to our location but bringing a flat collar for the actual session. For sighthounds or dogs that slip out of flat collars, a martingale collar works well.

After Your Session

About 1–2 weeks after your session, we'll meet again at my home studio for your Ordering Appointment — the first time you'll see your images. Get ready to laugh, maybe even shed a tear. It's all part of the experience!

"I was a little worried as Kianah our nearly 10 year old fur baby is not very warm to a lot of people unless they're part of our 'pack' but Ina was absolutely amazing, she took her time, was patient with Kianah. She made sure that she spent time with Kianah prior to taking the photos; to get to know her and let Kianah feel comfortable with her."
